Leeds to Saltaire on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal

Please note that these route pages are a work in progress. The figures below indicate route length; however, not all locks and bridges are included currently, so the time required may be underestimated.

Departure Point:
Cruising Hours: This route consists of 26.325 miles, 32 locks, 22 movable bridges and 0 tunnels. Which will take 2 days, 5 hours and 50 minutes when travelling for 7 hours per day at our default speeds.

This is a great option for a Short Break. The canal takes you out of Leeds city centre along the beautiful Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Industrial heritage, lots of greenery and a healthy amount of locks and swing bridges keep you busy on this cruise. Once you have reached the World Heritage Site of Saltaire, it’s a good idea to moor up for the night. You might want to explore the area around Saltaire for a little bit before heading back, as the history of this place is quite interesting. The estate was built by Titus Salt to improve the wellbeing of his workers. Housing, a big park, restaurants, a concert hall, museums and galleries are only a few of the things you can find there. David Hockney enthusiasts will certainly enjoy the permanent exhibition. Saltaire is a truly stunning example of a model Victorian village. Although Titus Salt didn’t approve of any pubs back in the day, there is a good selection of alehouses to be found here now. It’s time to turn around and retrace your steps back to the hire base in Leeds.
